Construction Campaign

AIM recently surveyed churches belonging to the Evangelical Alliance of Rwanda, asking church leaders what they perceived to be the greatest need in the church today. The consistent response was of the need for a facility to train future pastors.

Over 6 years ago, on its own initiative, the Alliance began a small theological college. Through the years, AIM has been involved by providing several teachers, as well as the director, for the Rwandan Institute of Evangelical Theology (RIET). AIM’s presence and support has been an affirmation and a strengthening of the church’s own initiative.

RIET currently has approximately 60 students enrolled. Our present rented accommodation is inadequate for holding classes and makes it difficult to envisage any significant increase in that number. Because of the desperate need for our own premises, just over 5 acres of land has been purchased and a master plan and designs have been produced that will allow for an expansion of the student body to 180.

The size of the building project is daunting and will be constructed in 4 phases including: 12 classrooms, a library, computer lab, 12-plus offices, a 300 seat auditorium, a woman’s section, 38 houses and apartments of varying sizes, 2 dormitories (with dining facilities) for students and faculty, and a guest house. There are enough funds to start construction, but not enough for completion. Bringing the project through all its phases will require a significant effort of coordination, as well as a matter of frequent prayer.

“So We Do Not Lose Heart” Construction Campaign Phase 1 details:

What has been done:
• Purchase of just over 5½ acres land (Completed)
• Completion of Site Plan and Architectural Drawings for Phase 1 (Completed)
• Obtaining construction permission with local Rwandan government authorities (Almost Completed)

Next steps towards completion of Phase 1 by January 2010:
• Construction of 2 buildings: a two story Administrative building, a two story Classroom building with space for a temporary library and computer lab
• Furnish offices and classrooms
• Purchase additional land as it becomes available

Funds needed:
• Total funds needed for phase 1 = $420,000
• Total funds raised as of February 2009 = $140,000
• Funds still needed = $283,000 / we are at 33% of our goal

Funds are also being raised for student scholarships and general support. We need help to enable students to pay fees they can afford. Also, we need support for all that goes towards making such a school run – books, utilities, maintenance, electricity and so on. A very sizeable proportion of our operating budget comes from student fees but it is not enough and we cannot increase fees without losing students.

We invite you to consider a contribution toward the construction of the campus.
